Amid the Covid-19 outbreak, major sporting events have been affected, including the largest cricket tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 13th edition of the lucrative league was suspended by BCCI until April 15.
Many fans hoped that the upcoming IPL would be a perfect setting for MS Dhoni’s return, but now the waiting period is extended until April 15. The last time fans saw the former Indian captain on a cricket ground was in England when India played a semi-final 2019 World Cup game against New Zealand.
The most important reason fans want to see Dhoni get back in touch is the T20 World Cup to be played in Australia later this year, as they feel that a good IPL career would surely give MSD a place in the equipment for the main event.
However, former India starter Aakash Chopra believes that Dhoni does not need the IPL to make his international comeback as he knows what he is doing.
“For a player like Dhoni, IPL was never going to be a criterion. If he had scored runs at the IPL, the experts would have been like ‘select Dhoni’, ‘do this and do that’. MS Dhoni knows what he is doing, whether he wants to return or not, ”Chopra said in a YouTube video quoted by HT.
Chopra said the cash-rich league is not a crucial factor in deciding whether or not Dhoni should be chosen, it is up to him and the selectors.
“IPL, I do not think it was a critical factor. If you want to return, it will be made available; if the selectors decide to choose it, it will be automatically selected because you will not get experience in supermarkets,” added Chopra.
The former Delhi player also expressed that a player like Dhoni will not be chosen for his IPL performance. If the Indian team needs it, then the IPL would not matter at all.
“Dhoni is a player with a lot of experience. If India needs MS Dhoni, then with or without IPL, it will return. ”
